Fitting and replacing

A new roof window needs an opening cut in the roof and the structure around it supported. The flashing is chosen to suit the covering, whether that is plain tiles, concrete tiles or slate. The structure and the product requirements decide what is possible, and building regulations approval may apply, so check with your local council. Pitch, rafter spacing and the size of window wanted all affect whether a fitting is straightforward or needs extra structural work.

Replacement of an existing window is simpler where a suitable unit exists in the same size. The flashing is normally replaced at the same time as the window, rather than reused.

Flat roofs and extensions

Rooflights can also be fitted into the flat roof of a back addition, bringing light into a dark kitchen or utility. These need correct upstands and waterproofing, so they are done together with the flat roof covering where possible. A back addition is often the darkest room in the house, and a rooflight can change it completely.
