Roof Moss, Algae and Lichen Removal in Nottingham Homes
Green or black patches on a Nottingham roof are usually moss, algae or lichen, and they tend to gather on north-facing slopes and in valleys where water lingers. Left alone, moss holds moisture against the covering and drops debris into gutters. Evans Roofing Services removes it from tiled and slate roofs across the city. After rain, you may notice green silt in the gutters or a patchy colour change across the slope.

City roofs can be awkward to reach. Terraces may have little room to set up at the back, and neighbouring buildings can shade the slopes and keep them damp. We plan the access first, then choose a method that suits the covering rather than using the same approach on everything.
Cleaning methods
Heavy moss is cleared by hand with suitable tools, followed by gentle cleaning of the surface. High-pressure washing can damage roof coverings, so low-pressure soft washing is used where appropriate. Fragile slates and their fixings are handled with particular care. On flat-roofed extensions, leaves and silt can sit in outlets and trims, so these are cleared as well.
- Manual moss removal where the covering allows
- Cleaning of tiles and slate using material-appropriate methods
- Algae and lichen removal, after assessing the growth
- Biocide treatment to help control regrowth
- Gutter cleaning to clear moss and leaf debris
What treatment can and cannot do
A biocide may help slow regrowth, but it cannot guarantee that moss will not come back, especially in shaded spots. Regular checks and gutter clearance help keep the roof in good order.
Cleaning also exposes cracks, slipped tiles and perished pointing that growth had hidden. Call or WhatsApp with photos of the roof and gutters, and we can discuss whether a clean on its own is enough or a few repairs should go with it. Gutter clearing is part of the same visit where needed.

Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Nottingham: common questions
Does moss damage a roof?
Heavy growth holds water against tiles and can block gutters, and in frosty weather trapped moisture can affect some coverings. Removing it and checking the roof underneath is a sensible way to see the true condition. If the roof is covered in thick moss, it may be cleaned in stages.
Can all moss be removed from a slate roof?
Most can be, but slate needs gentle handling because old slates and fixings can be fragile. We assess the roof first and decide how much can safely be done.
