Flat Roofing in Nottingham: EPDM, Felt and GRP for Extensions
Walk down almost any older street in Nottingham and you will see the flat roofs: a kitchen extension at the back of a Victorian terrace, a garage beside a 1930s semi, a small porch or a bay. They are easy to forget until a stain appears inside. Evans Roofing Services covers the city for flat roof replacement, recovering and repairs.

The three systems we are usually asked about are EPDM rubber, felt and GRP fibreglass. EPDM is a flexible synthetic membrane, felt is the traditional layered covering, and GRP is a continuous fibreglass finish. Which suits a given roof depends on its shape, what it covers and how it drains. We also check how the roof drains, because water that stays put for days points to a poor fall or a blocked outlet.
Why back extensions need attention
On terraced streets a flat extension often butts up against a neighbour's wall and the main house. That means flashings, upstands and lead details have to be right as well as the membrane. Failures usually start at these edges and joints, not in the middle of the roof.
Building regulations approval may be needed for some flat roof work, particularly new extensions, so check with your local council before you begin. Replacing the covering is also a chance to improve edges, trims and flashings that have been patched before.
Repair, recover or replace
After a leak, we look at punctures, seams, perimeter trims, outlets and anything passing through the roof before choosing a compatible repair. If the covering has deteriorated widely, or the deck is soft, a new roof is usually more sensible than repeated patching. We also look at how rainwater leaves the roof, since poor drainage shortens the life of any covering. Call or WhatsApp with photos of the roof and the room below and we can talk through what is likely to suit it.
- EPDM repairs and complete re-coverings
- Felt roofing and repairs suited to the existing product
- GRP fibreglass for appropriate roofs
- Edges, flashings, outlets and drainage details
- Older cement-sheet garage roofs, which may contain asbestos and must be identified before work

Flat Roofing and EPDM in Nottingham: common questions
How long can a flat roof sit with water ponding on it?
Ponding is a warning sign, because standing water speeds up wear on the covering and can hint at a poor fall or a blocked outlet. It is worth having the roof checked rather than waiting for a leak.
Can a rear kitchen extension roof be re-covered in EPDM?
Often yes, provided the deck beneath is sound and the details at the walls can be done properly. A look at the roof tells us whether it can be re-covered or needs more work first.
