The slates around the opening have to be cut and dressed with care to keep the roof weathertight. The opening must fit between the rafters, or the structure needs adapting, which is not something to attempt without assessing it first.
Cutting an opening and converting a loft may need building regulations approval, so check with your local council. On newer houses with concrete tiles, the flashing is matched to the tile profile in the same way.

Can a window be fitted to an old slate roof without damage?
With care, yes. The opening is cut to suit the rafters and the slates around it are dressed, though very fragile slates may need replacing. On very old slates, a few may need replacing around the frame, and we would tell you that in advance.
